Your sofa is one of the most used items in your home—it’s where the family relaxes, guests sit, and sometimes even where snacks get dropped. Over time, sofas collect dust, crumbs, stains, and even unpleasant odours. A thorough clean not only improves appearance but also extends the life of your furniture.
Step 1: Identify the Material
Before cleaning, check the manufacturer’s label for cleaning codes:
W = Water-based cleaner safe
S = Solvent-only cleaner
W/S = Either water-based or solvent
X = Professional cleaning only
This ensures you don’t damage the fabric.
Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly
Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment.
Go over cushions, seams, and under seat pads.
Don’t forget crevices where crumbs and dust hide.
For pet owners, a vacuum with a motorised brush roll or pet attachment is ideal.
Step 3: Spot Treat Stains
Fabric Sofas
Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
Dampen a microfibre cloth and dab (never rub) the stain.
For stubborn spots, use a fabric-safe upholstery cleaner.
Leather Sofas
Use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap and wipe gently.
For scuffs or stains, apply leather cleaner or white vinegar diluted with water (test first).
Step 4: Deodorise Naturally
Sprinkle baking soda lightly over the fabric. Leave for 20–30 minutes, then vacuum. This removes odours from spills, pets, or smoke.
For leather, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with a mix of water and vinegar, then buff dry.
Step 5: Deep Clean (Optional)
If your sofa needs a serious refresh:
Rent or buy a carpet & upholstery cleaning machine. These inject water and cleaning solution deep into the fabric and extract dirt.
Make sure you don’t over-soak the material—too much water can cause mould or shrinkage.
Step 6: Protect & Maintain
For fabric: apply a fabric protector spray to resist stains.
For leather: condition with leather cream every 6–12 months to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
Vacuum weekly to prevent dust build-up.
